Pastor's Update

04/29/2010

One of my heroes has always been Don Quixote. There was a time in my life when people would have said that I spent my time “tilting at windmills.” Maybe I have grown-up or maybe it is that I have grown tired, but its seems as if I no longer “tilt at windmills.” Then I read the words of Isaiah and I hear the promise from God that He will do great things for His people.

Through Isaiah, God tells His people, that the best days for Israel are yet to come. He tells them that if they thought parting the Red Sea was something, just hang on because You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet. I hear these promises and I wonder if it is time for us to start “tilting at windmills.”

This Sunday, as we share in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, let’s listen to God. Maybe we will hear the same promise made to us. God has done great things for us in the past, but hang on because You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet!

Spring Luncheon with Susan O’Donnell!

Join us on Saturday May 8th in the Worship Center for lunch and Christian comedienne, national speaker and radio personality Susan O’Donnell! Susan O'Donnell has been in broadcasting for 25 years now...nine of it in secular radio in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa...then, sixteen years ago God brought her to Houston to work with the Dove award winning #1 Christian Station in the Country. Susan is Assistant Program Director and Co-Host of KSBJ's Morning Show with Mike and Susan. She is a national speaker who travels the country using stand up comedy and song to remind people to Lighten Up! She's traveled to Nashville, Florida, Chicago, and New York-all while keeping her on air schedule every morning at KSBJ. Susan appeared at The Improv, and she's also opened for secular artists like Johnny Rivers at the Arena Theatre in Houston...to Christian artists like Kathy Troccoli, Avalon, Phillips Craig and Dean and Bob Carlisle.

Susan will talk about “How can we be the light of the world if we’re too afraid to Lighten Up?” Tickets are $25 each and will be sold between services on 5/2. You can also purchase tickets online through Parkway’s website. Child care is available by reservation only. If you have any questions, would like to help plan this event, or make childcare reservations email Womens Ministry.

The Revolutionary Way has hit Parkway! If you missed Sunday then you may not know what The Revolutionary Way is. The Way is a process that allows us to understand where we are spiritually. The idea is that each one of us can identify where we are, and then work on Taking A Step Forward. What I love most about The Way is that no one can tell you where you belong and no one will try to pigeonhole you into a box or a category.

Where onThe Way are you? Are you at the Foundational Faith Place? Growing Place? Or perhaps you are at the Deepening Faith Place? Not sure, check out The Revolutionary Way and find out. If you missed the teaching message Sunday, you can still listen to it to it, just click on Take A Step.

When you go to The Revolutionary Waypage of the Parkway website, you will find tons of information and resources to help you Take A Step Forward. You will find a “self-test” to help you determine where you are on The Way. You will also be able to see a list of activities being offered this summer, as well as a suggested summer reading list. All of this is for you and me to “draw near to God…”

If you have any questions, or need more information, please feel free to contact me. My prayer for you is that you will step out in faith and take that step forward. After all, Larry Waters is right, “A man (or woman) can’t just sit around.”

New Grow Group!

A new grow group will be starting May 9th on Sunday mornings. The new group will meet during the 9:00 worship hour. We will be doing some "Old Fashioned Bible Study"…reading Scripture, figuring out what it says, and then applying the Scripture to our lives. For more information, contact Gary Payne.

Carolina Creek Christian Camp

June 27th-July 3rd
This excellent Christian camp in Huntsville has partnered with Parkway to provide our children a meaningful camp experience for nearly half the cost of sending your child to camp on your own; only $300 for a full week! At this rate, perhaps you can scholarship your child’s unchurched friend! We do not accompany the children to camp, but all children enrolled under Parkway’s name will be grouped together for the week. Parents provide transportation to and from camp. The camp session is for ages 7-13. Register and pay online. Be sure to spread the word and invite your child’s friend to attend!

High School Senior Banquet

Friday, May 7th 6pm
The Banquet will be held in the Student Worship room and will be a dress up affair. The juniors will be serving the seniors dinner. We need Junior volunteers to serve, and parents of juniors to make designated dishes for this event. To volunteer contact Jodi.

Second Mile Work Day

Saturday May 8th, 9am-noon
Join us for Parkway’s next workday at 2nd Mile Mission Center where we stock shelves, sort donations, help in the warehouse and anywhere else needed. We need at least 20 people to make this happen, so bring your family and Small Group! If you have questions or to sign-up please contact Pam Johnson.

Family Promise

Rotation: May 16-23rd
Parkway hosts know the innocent face of our average Family Promise guest, who is 9 years old. One week each quarter, Family Promise and Parkway provides safe lodging, meals, welcoming care, and support services to help lift up families in need. We are honored to be God's hands and love our neighbors by hosting Family Promise guests; we need servant volunteers to provide evening meals and hosting in our Worship Center. This is a great time for Grow Groups to fellowship and serve. Families and individuals are welcome as well. Sign-up by contacting Shirley Connally or at the Outreach Kiosk in the lobby.

PLEASE EMAIL KATHY YOUR BIRTHDAY, YEAR NOT NEEDED!

Take care and God Bless….
